The Role

VSI is looking for an experienced and proactive Tech and Language Specialist to join our Subtitling team. This role combines technical expertise, linguistic quality and operational support to help ensure the delivery of high-quality subtitling and localisation services for a wide range of clients and content types.

Working closely with colleagues, freelancers and other teams across the business, you will provide technical and linguistic expertise across subtitling workflows. You will help maintain VSI’s high standards by carrying out quality control, supporting guideline development, assessing suppliers, testing tools and providing training and advice where needed.

This is a remote position working 9:30am to 6:00pm UK time (GMT/BST). Flexibility may be required beyond regular working hours during peak periods or to meet business needs.

What You Will Do

• Carry out full and spot technical quality control checks on subtitle, closed caption, and forced narrative files across multiple languages.

• Identify, correct and report technical issues including timing, positioning and other non-linguistic subtitle-related errors.

• Prepare final deliverables, including extracting forced narrative and partial subtitle files from full subtitle versions.

• Assess the scope of recut projects and perform quality control checks on recut deliverables.

• Review client and internal rejection reports, investigate issues and apply corrections or provide feedback as required.

• Evaluate subtitling, translation and localisation tests for prospective freelance suppliers and complete evaluation reports.

• Test and assess new tools and technologies used within the team’s workflows.

• Create, maintain and update language and subtitling guidelines for internal teams and external resources.

• Train new employees and freelance partners on relevant services, software, tools and working standards.

• Provide guidance on client-specific subtitling and language requirements.

• Quality check, prepare and export subtitle and localisation files.

• Proofread and perform linguistic quality control on a range of materials, including subtitles, technical content and internal documentation.

• Maintain expert knowledge of your working language, including current grammar, spelling and language standards.

• Create subtitles, closed captions, transcriptions, translations, accessibility scripts, voice-over scripts, recuts, conforms and platform localisation deliverables for a variety of content.

• Test automatic speech recognition (ASR), speech-to-text (STT) and machine translation (MT) technologies, assessing performance and accuracy across different content types and languages.

• Provide linguistic support and expertise to colleagues across the business.

What We Are Looking For

• Degree in Audiovisual Translation or a related subject.

• Native-standard English language skills.

• Experience in a similar role within a translation, localisation or media localisation environment.

• Experience carrying out technical quality control and recut work.

• Proven subtitling experience using a range of subtitling specifications and software.

• Professional proofreading experience.

• Strong technical aptitude and the ability to learn new tools quickly.

• Excellent organisation and time management skills.

• Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

• High levels of accuracy and attention to detail.

• A proactive approach and confidence using your own initiative.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

It Would Be Helpful If You Have

• Experience with machine translation (MT), automatic speech recognition (ASR) and speech-to-text (STT) post-editing.

• Experience testing MT, ASR and STT engines.
